You can update/change the demographic details on your Aadhaar card online anytime-anywhere through the official UIDAI website. However, your mobile number should be linked with your Aadhaar card to avail the update/correction facility online.

What Details can be Updated in the Aadhaar Card Online

As per the latest developments, you can get the following changed/updated in your Aadhaar card online through the official UIDAI website:

  • Address 
  • Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents (free of cost; if not updated in the past ten years)

How to Update Aadhar Card Online

A person can change his/her address and update proof of identity and proof of address documents on the Aadhaar card online. In order to change/update/correct the details of your Aadhaar card online, follow the steps given below:

Step 1: Login to the Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal using your Aadhaar number and OTP received on your registered mobile number

Step 2: Click on the “Update Address in your Aadhaar” option

Step 3: Select the type of online Aadhaar update, that is, whether you want to do a document-based address update or Head of Family (HOF)-based address update

Step 4: Enter the required address details 

Step 5: Upload scanned copies of original supporting documents for address update

Step 6: Pay an update fee of Rs. 50 using debit/credit card or via net banking

Step 7: You will get the Service Request Number that can be used to track the update request 

Step 8: Once your request is verified by UIDAI’s internal quality check operators, where your demographic data is matched with the supporting documents, you will receive an SMS notification containing the Enrolment ID

Step 9: After a few more validations by the backend software, your request processing will be completed and you will receive an SMS notification about the outcome. 

Update requests are generally completed within 30 days. Once updated, you can download the updated version and get your Aadhar card print out.

Steps for HoF-based Online Address Update

Residents who wish to update their address in Aadhaar and don’t have supporting documents in their name can now update their address in Aadhaar with the consent of the Head of Family (HoF).

Here is a step-by-step guide to carry out an HoF-based online address update in your Aadhaar card:

Step 1: Visit the ‘My Aadhaar’ portal (https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) and choose the option that lets you do Head of Family (HOF)-based address update

Step 2: Enter the Aadhaar number of the HoF for validation

Step 3: After successful validation of the HoF’s Aadhaar number, you will be required to upload a Proof of Relationship document*

Step 4: Pay an update fee of Rs. 50. Upon successful payment, an SRN (Service Request Number) will be generated and shared with you

Step 5: An SMS will be sent to the HoF about the authentication request

Step 6: The HoF needs to give his/her consent by logging into the My Aadhaar portal within 30 days from the date of receiving the request for successful address update in your Aadhaar card

Step 7: Once the consent is provided by the HoF, the address is updated in your Aadhaar card

* Proof of relationship document can include ration card, marksheet, marriage certificate, passport, etc. that mentions your name and the HoF’s and the relationship between the two of you.

Aadhaar Card Free Online Document Update Process

Here is a step-by-step guide to update your Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents online for free till 14th December 2024:

Step 1: Visit the UIDAI website and click “Document Update” listed under the My Aadhaar tab or directly visit the myAadhaar portal-  https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/

Step 2: Login using your Aadhaar number and the OTP received on your registered mobile number

Step 3: Check your address and identity details displayed on your profile

A. If the details displayed on your profile are correct,

i. Click on “I verify that the above details are correct”   

ii. Select the identity and/or address proof document from the drop-down menu that you wish to submit

iii. Upload the identity and/or address proof document#

iv. Submit your consent to complete the document update process

B. If the identity details such as your name, date of birth or gender on your profile are incorrect, you need to visit an Aadhaar center. However, in case your address is incorrect, you should follow the steps mentioned below to correct it:

i. Click on the link “If there is mismatch in the Address, click here” 

ii. Fill up the address details in the form displayed

iii. Choose the address document and upload it#

iv. Make the necessary payment and submit your request

Update Aadhaar Card Offline

What Details can be Changed in the Aadhaar Card Offline

All demographic data including your name, date of birth, gender, address, mobile number and email id as well as your biometrics data can be updated/changed by visiting an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

You can update Aadhar Card details by visiting the Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Here is how you can do it easily:

  1. Fill the Aadhaar card correction form i.e.
    https://uidai.gov.in/en/my-aadhaar/downloads/enrolment-and-update-forms.html (Aadhaar card correction form)
  2. Attach self-attested copies of proof validating your update request and submit the Aadhar correction form/Aadhar card update form along with documents.
  3. You need to pay a fee for every such visit to the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre for update or correction.

Why Does the Request for Aadhaar Card Update or Correction gets Rejected

The request for Aadhaar Card update/correction gets rejected sometimes, as UIDAI follows specific provisions to verify the details before making any changes in the Aadhar details. Only when these criteria are fulfilled, UIDAI updates the details on its system.

The following conditions should be fulfilled before corrections are made in the Aadhaar card details:

  • Adequate documents should be attached along with the form for verification. In absence of such documents, updating or correcting requests would not be processed.
  • All documents sent to UIDAI should be self-attested.
  • If the details mentioned in the form do not match with the document attached for verification, details of Aadhar card will not be updated.

A. One of the parents has to mention their Aadhaar details for the child. In case changes are done in their cards, they have to get it updated in their child’s Aadhar as well.

A. You can get your Aadhar updated with the new address and furnish your Aadhaar card as the proof of address for updating address in your child’s Aadhaar.

Q. I do not have a proof of address with me. Is it still possible to request for a change in the address in my child’s Aadhaar?

A. You can get the address updated in your child’s Aadhaar by furnishing your Aadhaar card as the proof of address. You do not have to provide an additional proof of address for your child.

Q. Do I have to provide my old information while requesting for change/correction/modification of information?

A. You do not have to provide any of the previous data. You have to mention only the new data that has to be updated in your Aadhaar. Also, provide a proof for the suggested update.

Q. Can I change/modify the information after I submit the request for Aadhar card correction online?

A. No, the request once submitted for Aadhar card update online cannot be modified. Please make sure you enter correct information in the form before finally submitting it.

Q. Will I be provided with an updated Aadhaar letter once the details are corrected?

A. You can download the updated e-Aadhaar from UIDAI’s website. Also, you can refresh your Aadhaar details in the mAadhaar app once the data in your Aadhar is updated.

Q. I have changed my email ID and need to update the same in my Aadhaar. How do I do this?

A. Yes, the update request of a person can be rejected on grounds that the documents validating the change are not submitted or are not accepted by UIDAI.

Q. Is it mandatory to provide C/o Details in Address?

A. To provide C/o  details in address is not mandatory. It is only required for letter details purposes which is a part of address.

Q. Explain why my update request was rejected?

A. There are various reasons due to which your update request can not be processed or rejected. They are:

  • If you upload a wrong PoA/PoI document uploaded –
  • If self-attested PoA/PoI document is not submitted
  • Due to transliteration error
  • When a resident fails to self-attest supporting documents
  • If documents uploaded by you via online SSUP portal are not found to be scanned copies of original documents
  • Wrong format of mobile and Aadhaar is shared
  • In case, you do not submit supporting documents in your name

Q. Is a certificate from a local MP/MLA/local body official accepted as a proof document?

A. In case a local MP/MLA/Local body official issues a certificate of Address along with a photo on the letter, it is accepted as a POA.

Q. What happens if my Aadhaar is suspended?

A. Those people who are not able to provide correct details at the time of enrolment, have a chance of getting their Aadhaar suspended.

Also, if a person has an Aadhaar but he applies again, his Aadhaar card will not be generated. This may happen even at the later stages of verification (after enrolment).

Q. Do I have to provide c/o information in the address?

A. It is not necessary to provide C/O information in the address when you go to update Aadhar card. You can also mention S/O, W/O or D/O in your address. However, if a person mentions it in his address, his address will be updated as it is written in the form.

Q. How much time does it take to update address in the Aadhar card?

A.Your address is updated in your Aadhaar card and the new Aadhar card is sent to you within 30 days of application. However, you can check the Aadhar card update status online and once it is updated, you can download your e-Aadhaar online.

How to Update Address in Aadhaar without Document Proof

Note: This service has been discontinued by UIDAI.

In case an you do not have a valid document proof, you can update your current residential address in your Aadhaar Card with the help of consent and authentication of the address verifier ( which can be your family member, friend, landlord, etc.) who allows you to use his/her address as a proof.

For Aadhar card update of your address in Aadhaar without document you can request for ‘Address Validation Letter’. Before proceeding for requesting the Address Validation Letter, you must keep in mind the following things:

  • Your address will be validated by sending your validation letter which will contain a secret code on the address verifier’s address.
  • It is mandatory for both the resident and the address verifier to update their mobile numbers with their Aadhaar.
  •  Due to any reason, if the address verifier fails to give consent within the set deadline, the request will be considered invalid and will have to initiate the procedure of request once again.

Step 1 : Visit Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal i.e https://ssup.uidai.gov.in/ssup/

Step 2: Click on ‘Proceed to Update Aadhaar’

Step 3:  Enter your Aadhaar number, Captcha Verification code from the given box and click on ‘Send OTP’ 

Step 4:  Now, enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your registered number and then click on ‘Login’.

Step 5:  After this you need to share your ‘Address Verifier’s Aadhaar number’.

Step 6: Following this, an SMS will be sent to your verifier on his/her registered mobile number with a link to grant consent for the update.

Step 7: After the verifier clicks on the link, he/she receives another SMS for the verification of OTP.

Step 8: Complete the verification using the OTP sent on the registered mobile number and captcha code to receive a Service Request Number (SRN) via an SMS.

Step 9: Now, log in with ‘SRN’, preview address, edit the address in local language (if required) and click on the ‘Save’ button. Tick mark the declaration and then ‘Submit’ your request.

Step 10: You will now receive the ‘Address Validation Letter‘ and the ‘Secret Code’ on the verifier’s address by post.

Step 11: You will have to again login to the ‘Online Address Update Portal’ and select ‘Update Address via Secret Code’ option.

Step 12:  Enter the ‘Secret Code’, review the new address and submit the final request.

You will receive the Update Request Number (URN) which you can use to check the status of your Aadhar card update request in future.

I wanted to create my babys aadhar card with 2 last name. That includes both mother’s and father’s last name. Is this valid?
When I went to aadhar card center they mentioned baby can never have 2 last name it can only have mother’s or father’s last name

You can have the mother’s name as the middle name and the father’s name as the last name.

In case you had enrolled for Aadhaar before 10 years, it is advisable that you update your documents in Aadhaar. However, it is not mandatory to do so in case there is no change in your Aadhaar details.

Minor changes in name can be updated online, whereas, for major changes you need to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. If your application and documentation validating your update request is correct and complete in all respects, the changes will be updated in your Aadhaar card within 30 days.

To update/correct the surname in your child’s Aadhaar card, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra and request for the same. Do remember to carry your child’s birth certificate, your Aadhaar card along with any other acceptable proof of your identity in original. You will need to pay a fee of Rs. 50 to get your child’s surname corrected/updated in his/her Aadhaar card.
