The Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar to 31st December. This has come out as a huge relief for all taxpayers who had filed their ITRs before 5th August but were unable to link the two documents till 31st August. The government has taken this step in the light of several complaints received from those who were facing problems in linking Aadhaar and PAN as their names in the two databases were different.
In a July press release, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had extended the deadline for ITR filing to 5th August from 31st July and also allowed taxpayers to do so without the linking of PAN and Aadhaar. However, they were asked to link the two before 31st August so that their ITRs could be duly processed by the Income Tax Department. This deadline has now been extended to 31st December.
This deadline is meant for those who had filed their Income Tax Returns by 5th August without linking PAN and Aadhaar. Deadlines for those who do not fall in the Income Tax bracket has not yet been announced by the government. Moreover, NRIs and the residents of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Meghalaya had been exempt if they do not have Aadhaar or Aadhaar Enrolment ID.
