The recent changes made on the American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card bring a mix of good news and bad news for consumers. Let’s begin with the good parts.
Accor Plus membership has been added, which could be quite helpful for travellers. The card already offers Taj Epicure membership providing benefits with Taj Group properties; addition of one more membership provides more opportunities for frequent travellers to save on their hotel stays. Moreover, earlier the card only provided complimentary Priority Pass membership with no free international lounge visits. May 2024 onwards, 2 complimentary international lounge visits have been added.
The monthly milestone benefit has also been increased from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000. However, the spend threshold to qualify for this benefit has also increased in tandem, from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000. For high spenders, spend threshold of Rs. 50,000 would not be very difficult to achieve, providing them benefits worth Rs. 12,000 in a year.
Now the disappointing bits.
The annual fee waiver condition has been increased from Rs. 5 Lakh to Rs. 10 Lakh. Users could previously choose between a Taj gift voucher worth Rs. 10,000 or annual fee waiver, but the Taj voucher benefit has also been discontinued.
Golf privilege was one of the highlights of the Platinum Reserve Card. Though the number of free golf games stays the same at 24 in a year, American Express has added spend-based eligibility condition to avail the same. Users would need to spend Rs. 50,000 or more in the preceding month to be eligible to avail the benefit twice a month, which could restrict moderate spenders from making the most of this feature.
Overall, the card remains a decent option for high-spenders as they can make the most of the monthly milestone benefit, golf benefit, etc. However, the card’s poor reward rate is a major drawback. Users would be able to get additional benefits but the core value-back would be much lower compared to what you could get with other premium cards like HDFC Diners Club Black, ICICI Emeralde Private or even with certain lower-fee options like Axis Atlas.
