Volkswagen, the leading Germany-based car maker, has introduced its much-awaited Ameo. The car is Volkswagen India’s first sub-compact sedan that measures less than 4 meters. Ameo is being advertised as a sedan that has been made in India and for India. The currently available Ameo variant would be the petrol version with a price tag starting at Rs. 5.14 Lakhs onwards (ex-showroom Mumbai). The company is expected to introduce three options – Highline, Trendline and Comfortline for its customers across multiple price points. According to sources, a diesel variant of Ameo would also be released in the recent future, probably after Volkswagen has completed its recall of diesel vehicles in India.
The Volkswagen Ameo features a three cylinder 1.2 litre engine, which is the same as the one that powers the Volkswagen Polo. Driven by a 5 speed manual gear box, Ameo’s engine can produce a maximum torque of 110Nm and 74bhp. In many ways, the new Ameo is similar to the Polo hatchback, however, it does feature unique design elements in terms of the rear profile, alloy wheels, fog lamps, projector headlamps and more. Apart from the new styling, the new Ameo delivers enhanced passenger security with driver and passenger airbags, rear view camera with parking sensors as well as the anti lock braking system (ABS). The introduction of Ameo is expected to cement the position of Volkswagen as a key player in India’s compact sedan segment.
