Credit cards can be great for making purchases and earning potential rewards. At the same time, they also help in building your credit history. However, there is no such thing as ‘free credit card’. Being a type of borrowing, credit cards also come with various terms and conditions. Most of you only look at the annual fee of the card but there are several other credit card fees & charges which you must be aware off.
Annual Maintenance Charge
This is popularly known as ‘annual fee’ and is not really a ‘hidden’ charge. The annual fee is charged once in a year and the amount varies from card to card. Sometimes, banks offer free credit cards which means that there will be no joining fee or annual fee on the card for a certain time period or for a lifetime.
What to Watch Out For? When you are offered a ‘free’ credit card, you must confirm with the bank whether the card will remain free of annual maintenance charges for a lifetime or just for a few years. |

Hi,
Just want to know that how much banks charge annual fees on credit card?
Hi Vimal,
Annual fee and joining fee varies from card to card. If you have a particular card in mind, you can check its annual fee on the bank’s website.
if the money is returned of purchase, will the same markup and GST be applicable on return amount too?
Hello
Subject to fulfillment of the conditions, no GST is levied on the return of goods.
Thanks for this information. I would like to have views on the following.
1. Credit cards are renewed automatically, instead if they are made to approach the client first and obtain their willingness it can help to make an informed decision on charges. Banks send the bill and also threats if not paid in time it will be treated as default. This is a threat.
2. Secondly, the late payment fees and interest charges are exorbitant. As high as 3.5% per month. This needs to be addressed.
After reading this article I got to know the charges levied on credit card. Thanks for this amazing article
Thank you for the review.
Hi,
I am an owner of AmEx Platinum Card. The Annual fee of the card is rs5000. There is an additional 900 charged for GST@18%. I wanted to know if the GST is supposed to be incl in the Annual fees or is separately charged.
Hi Abhishek,
The annual fee of Rs. 5,000 is exclusive of GST. This means 18% GST is charged on the fee amount additionally.
