Credit Card is one of the most important financial tools that helps in carrying out your daily transactions like paying utility bills, mobile bills, buying groceries and more. One of the important things to remember while using credit cards is to pay the outstanding dues on time. If in case you forget to pay the bill on time, you will have to pay the late payment fee along with the associated interest. Even a single missed payment can have a negative impact on your credit score
Here we will discuss the most important aspects of paying credit card bills. But before that let us delve deeper to find out how a credit card payment cycle works.

How payment due date and interest-free period work?
Credit card bills are cyclical so a new bill gets generated every month and it reflects all the purchases made since the last bill was generated. The payment due date is set 21-25 days after the date of bill generation and in this way, you can enjoy an ‘interest-free period’ of about 45-50 days.
Let us understand this with the help of an example.
Suppose your SBI credit card bill payment is due on 25th August and your bill was generated on 4th August. This means your previous bill was generated on 4th July; any purchases or payments that you made on the credit card after this date will be included in the next bill and the payment will be due on 25th August. So, the period from 4th July to 25th August is your interest-free period as you are required to pay the entire outstanding amount on 25th August.
Now, let’s say you purchased an appliance on 6th July. The interest-free period on this item will be of complete 50 days. You made another purchase on 30th July and on this you will enjoy an interest-free period of 26 days only.

Actually by credit card due on 11th due to some network issue I have paid by 1:30 AM 12th it means 1:30 mins after did it affects credit score?? Or Is it ok Or is there any buffer time to pay
Hi Lakshman,
Usually, banks give a grace period of a few days but it could vary from bank to bank. So, delay of a few hours is not likely to impact your credit score.
Say I have a credit card with limit of 1000.
I use it for 750, repay it right away, and then use it again for 750, repay it right away, all before due date.
So I use my credit card for 1500, even though limit is 1000, all before bill is generated, but due amount will be zero since I already paid the dues.
Question – Does doing this negatively affect my credit score since I am technically using even more than 100% of my credit limit in the month or is it not bad for my credit score since the due amount generated is low?
Hello Dhiren
There are several factors that impact your credit health; one of these is the credit utilization ratio. It is the ratio of the total outstanding balances on your credit cards to the total credit limit. If you have no outstanding balance on any of your cards, your credit utilization rate will be zero. Credit utilization makes up a major portion of your credit report. A low credit utilization ratio positively affects your credit score as it is the second most important factor that bureaus consider after your payment history.
Exceeding 30 percent utilization mark on any of your credit cards can damage your credit score. Also depending on your credit card type, you may or may not be allowed to spend over the limit assigned to you. Banks do not allow this for free- they charge a hefty amount as the over-limit fee for such transactions. For most of the banks, a minimum of Rs.500 is charged but it also depends on the amount by which you have crossed your credit limit.
If I pay before generating the bill of credit card payment it effects credit score or not
Hi Ravi,
Your credit score will not be affected as long as you keep paying at least the minimum amount due on or before the due date. However, you should wait for your bill to be generated in order to know the correct amount that you need to pay.
My bill generated Today I.e. 6th August.
If I purchase something on 7th August.
When will I pay for 7th August bill?
Hi K Sivasankar Reddy,
If your bill for the previous cycle has already been generated on 6th Aug, any purchase that you make on 7th Aug will show up in your next bill, that is, on 6th Sept. You will have to pay the bill on the due date of your Sept bill.
