In spite using your credit card responsibly, you might end up making a mistake by ordering the wrong item or you can purchase something that turned out to be different. Keeping this in mind, you should always be able to apply for a credit card refund regardless of the benefits. It is a process under which your account gets credited back for the purchased amount. Read on to know how credit card refunds work.

Hi,
I am supposed to get refund into my credit card account from Air India due to flight cancellation. Air India is saying that they have refunded the amount a month back but I still can’t see it in my credit card statement. Is there an electronic reference number for tracking the refund transaction that I can provide to my credit card guys. What is this reference number called? Air India gave me a refund number that my credit card guys can’t track. Please help.
Thanks
Janardan
Hi Janardan.
The Refund Reference Number should have worked in order to track your refund. In case your credit card company cannot track the number, it is advised to raise a ‘charge dispute’ with your credit card provider. You may also raise a ‘refund dispute’ with Air India as the reference number provided by them seems to be incorrect.
Hi Rupanshi,
I am expecting a huge refund of 1.6 lac because of cancellation of trip to my CC account. I paid the minimum due amount on first month and also will be paying 6K interest this month as I have not paid the full due amount. Though its confirmed, however its taking many days to process the refund. So I will paying the full due amount this time. But when I will get the refund back can I request the bank to give back the money by writing a cheque?
Hi Arindam,
When you receive the full refund, it will be shown as a credit in your credit card account. This means it will be added on to your available credit limit and you can adjust the amount against your future purchases.
You can contact your bank for further clarification on this and to understand whether they would agree to a credit balance transfer to your bank account.
Hi, I made a online purchase of around Rs.5000/- through my SBI credit card. Later the order was cancelled and by the time bill is generated for 5000/- and my current outstanding showing is same 5K. Now the Online merchant processed the entire refund and credit of 5000/- is appearing in un-billed transactions. So the net to net is Zero. Should i still need to pay the bill for this month?
Hi Siva,
If you did not make any other purchases apart from the said transaction, you need not make any payment. We advise you to take further clarification on this by calling SBI Credit Card Customer Care on 1800 180 1290.
Hello, my doubt is I had a refund of Rs 749. My credit card statement is still showing the unmodified amount but not showing the updated amount as 749 should have been deducted from the old amount. I paid Rs 6877 in my previous billing cycle. In my current billing cycle, my credit amount is 3387 but it should have been Rs(3387-749) as 749 was refunded last month. In this way I would have to pay 3387, not 3387-749 But if I am now looking into my previous statement they added my refunded money into that amount and it is showing 6687+749.
Hi Rohit,
We would be able to understand your situation better if you could share your statement date and the date on which the amount was refunded. Otherwise, you may contact the customer service of your credit card issuing bank/NBFC as they would be able to provide better guidance in this matter.
Hi Rupanshi, I am trying to understand whether Cr Card company can repay the cr balance available in my cr card account. Lets say, i made an online purchase of 50K Rs. and also paid through the payment cycle to Cr card issuing company however doe to certain issues, this transaction gets cancelled after i made the payment and cr is now reflecting in my cr card. Being a large amount, can i ask and get this money paid to me back?
Hi Girish,
Some card issuers may agree to credit balance transfer into your bank account. However, it is subject to multiple terms and conditions. You must speak to the customer support team to get better clarity on this. In your case, the extra amount paid is already added to your available credit limit. So even if a transfer is not possible, you can use it to make more purchases without getting billed for the same in the said billing cycle.
For example, if your available credit limit was Rs. 30,000, after this cancelled transaction (and reversal of Rs. 50,000), it will be Rs. 80,000. Now, if you make a purchase of Rs. 60,000 on your card, you will be billed for only Rs. 10,000 in the next statement.
Having said that, we advise you to get in touch with your credit card issuer to resolve the issue.
yes you can , I have done this in similar scenario with citi bank cr card .
