AUM: Rs 3,737 crore
Date of Inception: 5th Jan, 2010
This is the top performing large cap fund offered by Axis AMC with a SEBI mandate that requires it to invest at least 80% of its assets in the top 100 companies by market capitalisation. Large cap mutual funds tend to feature high quality companies which have already established themselves in their respective businesses and are thus typically considered to be low risk investments. Axis Bluechip Fund follows a focused strategy and is only invested in 22 high conviction large cap stocks. Its fund manager, Shreyas Devalkar has completed 3 years with the fund and established a good track record during his tenure. In the past year, the fund has given returns of 4.07% which is far higher than the average -0.88% delivered by its peers. Its three year returns are significantly higher at 14.93% and 5 year returns are 14.47%. Over both these time periods, the fund has either beaten its category or come close to it. This is an ideal investment option for an equity investor with a moderate risk appetite.

Fund 2: Axis Long Term Equity
Category: Tax-saving
AUM: Rs 17,852 crore
Date of Inception: 29th December 2009
Axis Long Term Equity Fund is an all-time favourite in its category. Its AUM (size) of Rs 17,852 crore is a testament to its popularity – it is currently the largest ELSS fund in India by AUM. The fund has delivered a blistering 19.03% annualized return over the past 5 years. If you go further back and check its return since launch almost a decade ago, the figure is still an impressive16.92%. Close to the present, 2018 was a tough year for equity schemes, yet Axis Long Term Equity has beaten its category average by a stunning margin of 7% over the 1 year period. Over the longer term as well, it has either come close to its category average or beaten it. This fund also follows a high conviction strategy in line with most other funds of Axis AMC with the top 10 holdings accounting for nearly 60% of its total assets. The fund has been managed by Jinesh Gopani since April 2011.

Fund 3: Axis Midcap Fund
Category: Midcap
AUM: Rs 1,808 crore
Date of Inception: 18th Feb, 2011
A mid cap fund can offer a relatively higher return than a large cap scheme but it does feature a higher degree of risk. Under SEBI regulations, a midcap fund is required to invest 65-100% of its assets in mid cap stocks (i.e. stocks lying between the 100th and 250th largest listed companies). In terms of AUM Axis Midcap fund is a relatively small fund in this category but a convincing outperformer. In the past year (which saw a full fledged rout of the mid cap category), the fund registered a decline of -0.43% compared to a whopping -15.18% decline for its category peers. Over the past three and five years as well it has outperformed the category average by 2-3%. Its relatively small size means that it is still nimble enough to grab opportunities in this space as valuations rationalise further. Shreyas Devalkar has been managing the scheme for close to 3 years now. Mr. Devalkar operates based on a valuation-conscious strategy preferring to hold cash when valuations get stretched and investing heavily when valuations get affordable. This strategy has so far managed to keep the wealth of investors protected and ensured outperformance for the fund even in extremely hostile market conditions.

Fund 4: Axis Liquid Fund
Category: Liquid
AUM: Rs 20,025 crore
Date of Inception: 1st Jan 2013
Liquid funds are considered to be a low to moderate return investment with low level of risk. It works best for investors who want to get returns slightly higher than fixed deposits with the flexibility to high degree of liquidity. As a result of relatively low returns even small differentials in returns matter a lot more in liquid funds than most other categories, as does consistency of returns. Axis Liquid Fund scores well on both these parameters. The scheme’s large fund size also helps since a larger liquid funds are less vulnerable to potentially massive redemptions by big corporate investors. Axis Liquid Fund currently has a size of more than Rs 20,000 crore which should reassure investors on this parameter as well. Moreover, the scheme also has a relatively low expense ratio (0.11%) for its direct plan variant, which ensures a low cost of investment.

Axis Liquid Fund | 7.56% | 7.33% | 7.89% |
