PAN or Permanent Account Number is a 10-digit alphanumeric number issued to all income-earning individuals or non-individual entities for income tax payment and availing government subsidies. PAN Card Form 49AA is basically an application form used by individuals who are not citizens of India or any non-individual entity incorporated outside India. Structure of Form 49AA
The structure of PAN Card Form 49AA and Form 49A is quite similar. Individuals filling Form 49AA only need to provide their basic details which is required for the process of KYC. This PAN Card form should be duly filled by the Foreign Institutional Investor or a Qualified Foreign Investor under a regulation issued by SEBI.
For Individuals –
- Marital status
- Citizenship Status
- Occupation details- Private sector service, Public sector/Govt. service, Business
- Professional, Agriculturist, Retired, Housewife, Student, or Other
For Non-Individuals –
- Type of company- Private Company, Public Company, Body Corporate, Financial Institution, Non-Government Organization or Charitable Organization
- Gross Annual Income in INR
- Net-worth (Assets less liabilities) in INR
- Does it have few persons or persons of the same family holding beneficial ownership and control
- Is the entity involved/providing any of the following services- Foreign Exchange, Money Changer Services, Gaming/Gambling/Lottery services (Casinos and Betting Syndicates) or Money Lending, Pawning
- Whether the applicant or the applicant’s authorized signatories/trustees/office bearers are politically exposed or related to a politically exposed person
- Taxpayer Identification Number in the country of residence

How to Fill PAN Card Form 49AA
Form 49AA consists of 17 sections and various sub-sections to provide ease to the applicant in filling up the PAN card form. Given below are the components that Form 49AA serves to be duly filled:
- Assessing Officer Code: The first field that the applicant needs to fill is of Assessing Officer (AO Code). It consists of AO Type, Range number, or AO number. You can find information regarding this on the NSDL website
- Full Name: Fill in your title such as Mr./Mrs./Ms./ with your surname, full name, and middle name. (Full expanded name to be mentioned as appearing in proof of identity/address documents: initials are not permitted)
- Other Name: If you have been known by other names, then mention it in the given space of the form
- Gender: Tick mark for your gender. It is applicable only for the individual applicants
- Date of Birth: Enter your Date of Birth/Incorporation/Agreement/ Partnership/Association of Person in the next field
- Details of Parents: Enter the details of your parents in the given space. It is applicable only for individual applicants:
- Father’s Name (mandatory)
- Mother’s (optional)
- Tick Mark the name of either father or mother which you may like to be printed on PAN card (in case no option is provided then PAN card will be issued with father’s name)
7. Address: Enter your residence address and office address in the given space with all the necessary details such as name of the premises/building, area, town, city, district, PIN Code, etc.
8. Address for Communication: Tick mark the address for communication i.e. either residence or office
9. Telephone Number and Email Address Details: Fill in your mobile number and a valid e-mail address to receive regular updates regarding your PAN application
10. Status of the Applicant: Status of the applicant such as Individual/ HUF/Company/Partnership Firm and others mentioned in the form needs to be tick marked as applicable
11. Registration Number: It is mandatory to provide the registration number if you are a company, firm, etc.
12. Country of Citizenship and ISD Code: Mention your country of citizenship and ISD code of the country of citizenship
13. Source of Income: Fill in the source of income i.e.
Salary/Income from Business or Profession/Income from House Property/Capital Gains/Income from other Sources/No Income
Also, fill in the Business or Profession Code in case you have selected the Income from Business or Profession as the source of income.
14. Representative or Agent of the Application in India: Mention the full name and address of the representative or agent of the applicant in India. The name should not be in abbreviations. Moreover, the address should include the details such as the name of the building/premises, area, locality, city, state, PIN Code, etc.
15. Documents Required: After that, you need to enter the name of the document submitted as Proof of Identity(POI) and Proof of Address(POA).
16. KYC Details: The KYC details are supposed to be filled in by Foreign Institutional Investor or a Qualified Foreign Investor as prescribed under the regulations, 1997 issued by SEBI. Details like that of individuals or non-individuals, Gross Annual Income, in case of a Public Company, whether listed on a stock exchange, etc.
17. Declaration: In the last section, you need to fill your name, date, place and duly sign/put your left thumb impression on the form. Submit the duly filled form to NSDL e-Govt. or UTIITSL office along with other required documents and fee’s demand draft.

Citizens outside the country are supposed to submit necessary documents along with PAN Card Form 49AA for Proof of Identity and Proof of Address. Given below is the list of acceptable documents that individuals and HUFs can submit along with the application form:

- Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card issued by Government of India
- Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card issued by Government of India
- Other national/citizenship Identification Number/Taxpayer Identification Number duly attested by“Apostille” (in respect of countries which are signatories to the Hague Convention of 1961) or by the Indian Embassy/High Commission/Consulate in the country where the applicant is located or authorised officials of overseas branches of Scheduled Banks registered in India
Documents for Proof of Address (Copy of Any One of):
- Passport
- Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card issued by Government of India
- Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card issued by Government of India

- Bank account statement in the country of residence
- Non-resident External (NRE) bank account statement in India
- Certificate of Residence in India or Residential permit issued by the State Police Authorities
- Registration certificate issued by the Foreigner’s Registration Office showing Indian address
- Visa granted and Copy of appointment letter/ contract from Indian Company & Certificate (in original) of Indian address issued by the employer
