UAN or Universal Account Number is a unique identification number allotted to each and every member of EPFO. It is issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. A member can have only one UAN during his service period where all EPF accounts are linked with his UAN. But, to avail these services, UAN activation and UAN registration is mandatory. One can generate UAN and activate it online through the UAN member portal.
UAN Activation Process
When an employee changes his job, his EPF account number and member ID changes but UAN remains the same.
In the event of allotment of two UANs, the member should inform his employer as well as EPFO instantly so that old UAN can be deactivated and the previous EPF corpus is transferred to the new PF account.

Hi.. I have my UAN but left job in 2016. After that, I worked in only contractual jobs due to personal reasons which did not have PF components. Now I have joined a new company on full-time role. Now the employer is asking for the PF epassbook. I am unable to login since my aadhar is not linked with UAN. I don’t even remember the password. The error message is asking me to link UAN to aadhar through employer. What to do?
It is suggested to get your UAN linked with Aadhaar through the previous employer. In case you cannot do so, you can try getting it done through your present employer.
You can activate your UAN by clicking on the Activate UAN option on the EPF member portal and filling in the necessary details.
Yes, the process may tak up to 4 hours to reflect online.

Also the pf number is MH/KAN/xxxxx/yyyyy I tried online on epfo portal, it doesn’t work somehow to generate UAN
You can try again using the Know your UAN option on the EPFO member portal and filling up details such as your Aadhaar/PAN/member id and other necessary information.
