What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax commonly referred as GST is the single indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. It includes comprehensive taxation system where in taxes like Central Excise Law, Service Tax Law, VAT, and others have been abolished. Implemented from July 1, 2017, it has adopted different GST slab for different goods and services in the country in which both the state and central government levies tax on the same.
What is HSN Code?
Harmonized System of Nomenclature commonly called as HSN Code developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) is a six-digit uniform code that classifies more than 5000 products and is also accepted worldwide. It was developed with a vision of classification of goods all over the world in a systematic manner. This code helps in determining the quantum of the products traded or imported all through the nation.

What is CGST
Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) refers to the indirect GST tax levied by the central government on the supply of goods and services taking place within a state. It is charged on the base price of the product. The CGST rate is one of those taxes which is charged during intra-state transaction and the other being SGST. These both taxes are usually charged at same rate on the sale of the product.
What is IGST
Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) refers to the GST tax levied on the interstate transaction of goods and services as well as imports. This tax is collected by the central government and is then distributed among states. This tax ensures that the state has not to settle for the tax with other states. They can directly deal with the central government for the settlement of tax.
What is SGST
State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) is the indirect tax levied by the state government on the inter-state transaction for goods and services in the country. This form of tax has replaced all the existing taxes including- VAT, State Sales Tax, Entertainment Tax, State Cesses and Surcharges and others. The tax is collected by the state government itself which is also the sole claimer of the revenue earned.
What are the different tax slabs under GST?
Under GST Act, 2017 government has proposed a 4-tier structure under four tax slabs comprising 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% for all goods and services. Government of India has also exempted many of the goods and services from GST tax slabs which include sanitary napkins, newspapers and magazines, agricultural implements and others.

18% | Hair oil, toothpaste and soaps, capital goods and industrial intermediaries are covered in this slab |
28% | Luxury items such as small cars , consumer durables like AC and Refrigerators, premium cars, cigarettes and aerated drinks , High-end motorcycles are included here. |
GST Tax Rates revisions (Revision, all big recent revisions)
28th GST Council meeting held on July 21st, 2018 came up with number of revisions regarding the GST slab rate. This included GST rates deductions on 28% slabs which came down to 18% and 12%. Goods and services having 18%, 12%, `5% GST slab rates came down to Nil for many of the products including rakhi, sanitary napkin, deities made of stone/marble/wood and others. Products which came down from 12% to 5% included handloom dari, phosphoric acid, chenille fabrics and others.
Bamboo flooring, zip and slide fasteners, hand operated rubber roller were included under the GST slab of 12% which came down from 18%.GST rates for specified handicraft items have been brought down from 18% to 12% and for some 12% to 5%!
