Trade License is usually issued by the local urban body of the place, be it municipal corporation, municipality/municipal board, town committee/nagar panchayats or notified Areas of the concerned urban areas. The license is required for starting a business in urban locations. The rules and regulations of trade license varies from one state to another. Hence, applicant will have to apply for trade license application to the relevant authority of a particular state.
Trade license does not grant ownership of the property where trade is conducted but only allow trade related activities to occur.
Eligibility for a Trade license
- The applicant must have crossed 18 years.
- The applicant should not have any criminal record.
- The type of business must be legally permissible.
However, the applicant should contact their respective local urban body as eligibility criteria may vary from one state to another.
Validity Period of Trade License
The trade license is usually valid for one financial year i.e., 1st April to 31st March next year after which it has to be renewed at the end of year by paying renewal fees. Late fee is also charged for delayed renewal of trade license.

How to Apply Trade License Online
The procedure and jurisdiction of trade license varies from state to other and therefore application needs to be submitted to respective state government, corporation or municipality. Furthermore, some states also require in-person verification by officials before issuing trade license. Trade License in Haryana
The applicant can make the trade license application online via Antyodaya Saral Haryana (saralharyana.gov.in). The corporation claims to issue license within 15 days of the application. Applicant is required to pay Rs 100 each for the service charges and Atal Seva Kendra Service Charges.

Applicants can apply for trade license in West Bengal through online in e- district portal (http://edistrict.wb.gov.in). Application Identification Number (AIN) will be generated after submission of application and supporting documents. Then, applicant can make payment online and payment certificate will be generated in real-time.

Trade License in Bihar
Applicants can visit nagarseva.bihar.gov.in for filing online trade license application. Once the application is scrutinized, a SMS/email will be sent to the applicant for the payment of issuing the license. The competent authority will verify and issue the license once the payment is received. Urban Development & Housing Department, Government Of Bihar claims to issue license within 30 days from the date of application.

Trade License in Karnataka
Applicants can visit the web portal of Seva Sindhu, Government of Karnataka (sevasindhu.karnataka.gov.in) for online trade license application process. B1/K1 centers, CSC centers, AJSK centers, Bapuji Seva Kendras offers offline application process and Rs 25 is charged as service fee for the same. The service fee is nil for online submission of application. The delivery time for licensing issuing is 30 days.

Trade License in Uttar Pradesh
Applicants can visit Nivesh Mitra Uttar Pradesh web portal (https://niveshmitra.up.nic.in) for submission of trade license application. The fee is variable Fee and is auto calculated based on inputs on the application form. ULB’s (Nagar Nigam/Nagar Palika Parishad) verifying officer would verify the application and forward it to the approving officer through online portal. Applicant can track the status of their application at dashboard.

Trade License in Telangana
Trade license form is available on Municipal Administration of Telangana (emunicipal.telangana.gov.in). Applicant need to go through the mobile OTP verification and on submission of documents and successful payment of license fee, a TIN number is generated and Trade License Certificate and an SMS is sent to the concerned applicant.
Every trade license holder having trade license fee up to Rs 5000, has to pay the green fund @ 10% on trade license fee and Rs 1,000 (per each trade license) in case the license fee is above Rs 5,000.

Trade License in Tamil Nadu
Applicants can visit tnurbanepay.tn.gov.in (website maintained by Commissionerate of Municipal Administration) for submission of trade license application. Trade license will be issued within a week’s time after payment of license fee.
